Nox
Design Process Context & Systems Course - Final Project

Overview
Nox was a final project of an undergraduate design class where we were in assigned teams of three. We were challenged to re-design the waking up experience for college students or working professionals. We created Nox, a vibrating mattress pad that connects to a phone app to gently and healthily wake up individuals in time to start their day.

Problem
Traditional alarms can disrupt others in the area who do not need to wake up at the same time as the user. They also wake people up abruptly and often in the middle of deep sleep, which is unhealthy. While other sleep logs do exist, they are often based on the user’s input, and other apps require the user to sleep with their phone under their pillow, which exposes them to high amounts of electromagnetic radiation.

Goal
Create a mattress pad connected to an app that uses vibrations to wake users up at the optimal part of their sleep cycle, and does not disrupt those around the user.

Role
UX designer -
Collaborated closely with teammates to brainstorm app ideas, sketched and prototyped the calendar and chart, wired the prototype, and came up with next steps.

Methods
Sketching, prototyping
Tools
Sketches, Marvel App, Illustrator
Things to Consider
For this assignment, we were limited to just showing a few screens, and we had to include a physical aspect connected to an app. Since I was working with two other UX design students, we needed to collaborate to make sure our screens had a same look and feel without having a very well-defined design system. In general, this project followed a very structured process and timeline due to class deadlines.

Sketches
Mattress pad: Uses motion technology to sense the different stages of the user's sleep cycle and will silently wake the user up during the lightest stage of sleep through gradually increasing vibrations.

App: Includes customizable temperature controls, vibration alarm settings, and sleep cycle logs.

Results, Reflection and Next Steps
Some next steps could include:
-
add a community aspect - forum
-
however, this could be an invasion of privacy and strays away from initial idea
-
-
include personalized user settings
-
recommends what is healthy based on personal statistics
-
-
consider a mattress rather than a mattress pad
-
chose mattress pad because it is cheaper, accessible and college student friendly, but could add a mattress option for the working professional persona
-
-
add a remote
-
need a way to operate the pad without the app for safety purposes.
